CHALLENGE #1: J Dilla (any track, any style)

First challenge of this series was J Dilla.  At first I thought it was going to be easy, but as I got into it I realized it was a bit more difficult.  As you probably know, J Dilla used mostly chopped samples from a lot of songs to build a single track, so to create something unique from an already complexly layered track took some real thinking.

I ended up choosing track #13 off the album “Welcome to Detroit”, a song entitled J Dilla feat Phatt Kat.  The track went several directions before I decided on an avenue, but its something that I ended being pretty happy with overall.  The bassline is a sliced up piece of audio from the track, drums are sampled, and the rest is well pretty straight forward.  I hope you enjoy it.  These challenges will continue so there are many more remixes to come!    Cheers! ]]> http://www.jamesmidik.com/2009/12/03/j-dilla-feat-phatt-kat-midik-tech-hop-remix/feed/ So friend and local producer BrandoBrownBlue and I have started to do weekly/monthly challenges for one another.  The premise  is one will choose an artist ... 4. Open Bomes
5. In Bomes choose “Midi In” as XONE:3D Midi
6. Choose “Midi Out” as Midi Yoke: 1
7. Go back to Ableton
8. Turn on track and remote Midi Yoke:1 under Midi Sync in Ableton Preferences
9. On the Bomes icon in your system tray (by the clock) Right Click and select “Midi Thru”
10. Go to Bomes and open the XONE:3D Template (included in the DLed pack).
11. Go back to Ableton and enjoy!

That’s it! You can now use the mouseless nav template. Included in the DL pack is an image of the control layout, or check it out on flicker here >

Editing this Ableton Template for a Different Controller In Bomes

1. Double click on the “Incoming Trigger” you wish to remap to your controller
2. Check the box “Capture Midi”
3. Press your midi key, pad, or pot/knob
4. Select that note from the list
5. Click apply
6. Keystroke should now be mapped to your controller
7. Go to Live, and try it out!

Thats all you need to do for applying these setting to your different controller (Trigger Finger, midi keyboard, ect..).  All these keystrokes are for Ableton Live, so as long as you’re using that, you’re good!
